I’m having trouble understanding why you need the jey statement. I would have though that the router can keep track of which site the tunnel traffic by it’s source address, is this not the case ? We have a number of GRE tunnels all with the same source address out to different hosts on the internet and have never need to use the GRE key statement.

      Hi Paul,

      thanks for your note.

I wrote this post after I had a problem while setting up a GRE VPN with 3 old 1760 routers. I could not bring it up until I added the tunnel key statement on the config on all 3 routers. I thought IOS needed it as tiebreaker.

Right now I tested the same scenario in a very simple lab, using different IOS releases and platforms, and I found it’s working without the “tunnel key” statement too. May be the problem I faced was just related to that platform/IOS pair.

As soon as I can find the right IOS used for that project I’ll try to reproduce the issue; in the meantime I’ll bring this post off-line, in order to avoid confusion and misleading informations.

      Many thanks,

      Pierky
